Healthy Gums

What Are Healthy Gums?

Your gums are made of soft skin-like tissue that covers the bones that support your teeth. When gums are healthy, they form a tight seal that limits the places bacteria can hide.

Healthy gums are usually a light or coral shade of pink, but may also contain other pigments depending on your ethnic origin. Color changes in your gums (redness, yellow spots) as well as gum tenderness and bleeding may indicate gum disease.

What is gum disease?

Gingivitis, also called gum disease, is caused by plaque building up along the gum line. The plaque releases toxins that irritate the gums and cause them to become inflamed. If left untreated, gingivitis can weaken the seal between gums and teeth, causing the gums to recede and exposing the root of the tooth.

What are the signs of gum disease?

Gum disease is rarely painful, especially in the early stages. Although there may be no visible signs, some of the common indications of gum disease are:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss (healthy gums will not bleed)
  • Gums that are red, swollen, or tender
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth (receded)
  • Pus (infection) between the teeth and gums
  • Loose permanent teeth or separating (drifting) teeth
  • Persistent bad breath

What are the dangers of gum disease?

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. More importantly, the infection releases toxins into the bloodstream leading to serious health risks. Some of those health risks include heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

How can I prevent gum disease?

The best "brushers" in the world will naturally build up tartar on their teeth. Even patients with healthy gums and teeth should see their dentist regularly to remove the build-up of tartar and check for the formation of new cavities. Patients with gum disease, or patients that build up tartar on their teeth, need to have their teeth cleaned to help control the amount of bacteria in the mouth. At your regular cleaning appointments, we always evaluate the condition of your gums.

Flossing helps remove food and plaque between the teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach, as well as along the gum line, where plaque tends to build up. It is a good idea to floss after brushing your teeth.
