The Basics of Snoring?
Snoring is a common condition that can affect anyone, young or old. Occasional snoring is generally not considered serious and is commonly just a nuisance for your bed partner. However, if you are a habitual snorer, you not only disrupt the sleep of those close to you, but also impair the quality of your own sleep.
Habitual snoring may be a warning sign for a very serious health condition called Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea can increase your risks for a variety of serious health problems. Because people with Sleep Apnea often grind their teeth (a condition called Bruxism) and may also have Reflux Disease, a well-trained dentist may be the first to notice these signs on your teeth!
What Causes Snoring?
Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is physically obstructed. Air flow can be obstructed by a combination of factors, including obstructed nasal passages, poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue, bulky throat tissue (common in overweight patients), and a long soft palate and/or uvula. The vibrations from relaxed soft tissue in the mouth, nose and throat produce the sound referred to as snoring.
Can Snoring be Stopped?
Fortunately, yes! Snoring can be controlled using simple oral appliances (mouthpieces) that maintain proper jaw alignment and keep critical airways open.
